Everton installed undersoil heating to defrost their pitch in 1958!
Follow their lead and give your fridge or freezer a defrost.
What difference does it make?
Freezers are big energy users. One way of reducing the consumption is to make sure there is no build up of ice and frost on its walls.
This activity lowers your carbon footprint by:
9.6 KG CO₂
What do you need?
- Wash basin
- Towel
- Mop
Step by step
First check your fridge or freezer. If there is no ice built up in it, don't do this one!
If you do have ice, you'll have to empty your fridge or freezer. It might take some planning - especially for storing the sensitive things.
Once empty, unplug the appliance. Leave the door open and wait for the ice and frost to melt leaving doors opened.Put a bowl or tray down to collect water.
You'll have VIP seats to watch global warming happen in freezer! Make sure you take a picture of you defrosting the freezer, not just a freezer!
Need Help?
It takes a few hours - say two to three hours.
Keep any frozen, dairy, meat or fish refrigerated. A cooler box, kept cold with ice will help. If the outside temperature is lower than 5 degrees it is ok for items that are generally kept in the fridge - for a short time.
