Walk around the house and draw a cross on any products whose packaging is not recyclable or biodegradable. Next time you shop, can you find alternatives which are recyclable or refillable?
What difference does it make?
A study by Which? found that 32% of brand packaging in the UK is not “easy to recycle in practice”. It's good to know which products these are so we can change to alternatives and put pressure on big brands to switch to recyclables.
What do you need?
- Marker pen
Step by step
Take your marker pen and go around the house looking for household products and cosmetics. On each one read the packaging to find out whether 100% of the packaging can be recycled or will biodegrade. Some of the symbols on packaging can be misleading so if it's unclear, the Recycle Now website has a great guide.
Gather all of your crossed items together for a photo. Make sure to put a cross on them with a big dark marker! When they run out, you'll be reminded to look for a more sustainable option.
Next time you shop, can you look for alternatives with packaging that's kinder to the planet? Your aim is to get the amount of crossed items down as much as possible over time.
If you're surprised by the amount of non-recyclable packaging sold by big brands, why not post a photo of your crossed items on social media and tag the companies.
Ask them what they are doing about moving to recylable or biodegradable packaging? Don't forget to tag #planetsuperleague too!
