You can still do your bit for the planet, even on holiday! The beach is one of the most important places to pick up litter.
What difference does it make?
Every day around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans and Britain contributes an estimated 1.7 million tonnes annually! Beach cleans stop some of it reaching the sea and killing wildlife.
What do you need?
- Gloves
- Bin Bags
- Litter grabber (optional)
Step by step
Spend some time as a family or with friends combing an area of beach for litter. Pick up as much as you can find and dispose of it responsibly. It's amazing what you can find if you look really hard, you might even spot some wildlife whilst you're at it!
Be a hero and try to collect as many cigarette butts as possible. Those ones are as nasty as their as small! Don't forget to take photos of yourselves in action.
Make sure you put the litter in the right bins so anything that can be recycled goes to the right place. You could sort the rubbish into different bin bags to make this easier - one for paper, one for plastic, one for glass. If the bins are all full on the beach, take the rubbish home to dispose of it.
Don't forget to take a picture of your team in action! Nice work! You deserve an ice cream.
Need Help?
It is as long as you wear gloves and ideally, equipped with a litter grabber Be safe with a hat and sun cream too. Don't forget those half-time refreshments!
Call some friends, ask your local council to add some posters and bins. If they are not responsive, seek a solution involving your local community (friends, family, school...). Even doing a little bit is better than nothing.
