It's a race to pick 11 players up in your bus and win the game!
What difference does it make?
This activity is a double whammy ... a screens off evening AND reusing packaging to make something new that you can use again and again.
What do you need?
- Cereal box opened out
- 2 small juice cartons
- 8 bottle caps (same size)
- White paper
- Players' pictures from magazines (optional)
- Marker pen
- Glue stick
- Paints/felt pens/crayonsfor colouring
Step by step
To make the board: Open out the cereal box and cut the flaps off (don’t throw away – you’ll need these later). Draw the game board on to the cereal box, first with a pencil and then go over with a marker pen. If you'd like to, colour the board in. Cut squares of white paper for each game space and write the words as shown in the picture with a marker pen (or write straight on to the spaces).
To make the buses: Cut the front off two juice cartons (wash out and dry). Ask an adult to help with the cutting for the buses – this bit can be tricky. Glue strips of white paper around the sides and decorate. Glue 4 bottle tops on each bus. Use the cereal box flaps to make an insert for each bus – this will be where the players sit. Cut/poke with scissors 11 slits on the insert. Slot into the bus.
To make the players: Cut 22 little strips from the cereal box flaps. Decorate. You could cut out players' pictures from football magazines and stick on the strips or write players' names on them.
To make the cards: Cut some white paper into 10 Challenge cards and 4 Park the Bus cards. Think of some fun challenges for teams to complete. Ideas: Do 10 sit ups, Re-enact a famous goal celebration, Run around the room 5 times (if you're playing in a team, another team member should do live commentary), Name 5 players with an S in their name in 20 seconds, Do 20 jumping jacks, Say Park the Bus 10 times as quickly as you can...
How to Play: You can play with 2 players or 2 teams. The winner is the first to fill their bus with 11 players. Starting on a square of your choice, take it in turns to throw the dice and park your bus facing the square you land on. Pick Up A Player square = pick up one player. Penalty Shoot Out square = Both players/teams roll the dice and the one with the highest score wins a player. Challenge square = Pick a challenge from the pile and complete it to win a player. Park the Bus square = pick up a Park The Bus card and use it to block a square on the board. Once it's there, your opponent will not be able to win a player on that space but you will. Come on you Blues/Reds = do nothing. Roll again = roll again!
